Advantages of the Nakavision H.265AI compression

The Nakavision C1's H.265AI compression reduces storage and bandwidth requirements by 50–70% compared to standard H.264

On the Nakavision C1 camera, H.265AI (hardware-based intelligent compression, also known as H.265X / H.265+) uses an average of 50–70% less storage and network bandwidth compared to earlier standard H.264 encoding. In static environments, such as at night or in rarely visited locations, savings can reach up to 75–80%.

What makes "AI" encoding save so much more?

Compression LevelHow Savings Are Achieved
Basic H.265 vs. H.264 encodingEmploys larger, more dynamic coding tree units (CTU) and advanced motion estimation, which alone provides an approximate 40–50% reduction in size at the same visual sharpness.
H.265AI optimizationBackground modeling and ROI (Region of Interest): The processor separates static backgrounds (walls, asphalt, furniture) from actual targets (people, vehicles). Static areas are refreshed far less frequently and compressed more aggressively.
Dynamic GOP (I-frame control)When nothing is happening, it extends the interval between full keyframes (I-frames) and lowers the bitrate (down to a few hundred kbps). When motion is detected, it immediately inserts a new keyframe and ramps up the bitrate for maximum detail.
Nighttime AI noise reductionIn low-light conditions, digital image noise is not encoded as motion, preventing sensor noise from unnecessarily consuming storage.

Practical storage requirements on the Nakavision C1 (at 3MP resolution)

For continuous (24/7) recording, actual storage requirements vary depending on motion frequency:

Encoding FormatAverage BitrateDaily Storage Requirement (24 hours)128 GB MicroSD Capacity
H.264~3–4 Mbps30 – 42 GB / day~3 – 4 days
Standard H.265~1.5–2 Mbps16 – 22 GB / day~6 – 8 days
H.265AI (Nakavision C1)~0.8–1.2 Mbps8 – 14 GB / day9 – 14 days*

*(If not set to continuous recording, but only to motion and human detection, a 128 GB card can retain footage history for weeks, or even 1–2 months. Nonetheless, continuous recording is recommended; if the SD card's retention capacity is insufficient, record over the local network to a PC, NVR, or NAS as well.)
